4 innovative applications of array camera technology

OpenNCC has helped customers customize camera array solutions for many different scenarios.

There are a number of reasons for wanting to combine multiple sensors for simultaneous live capture of scenes. For one, arranging sensors in an inward-facing configuration will allow for the simultaneous capture of both the front and back of objects, so that the real-time, whole surface volumes of objects can be captured. The 3D recording can be used, for example, for Virtual- or Augmented-Reality “teleportation” and teleconferencing. Alternatively, arranging sensors in an outward-facing configuration will create a depth sensor system that has a much wider field-of-view (FOV), and can be used to capture both forward and backward facing depth. This composite FOV configuration is desirable for autonomous robots, drones and vehicles, as well as for security systems that need to continuously analyze a wide surrounding area.

Consumers are familiar with the application of camera array on mobile phones, which greatly improves the quality of mobile phone photos.

The success of array cameras on mobile phones cannot overshadow the brilliance of array cameras in other areas.Array cameras can solve specific problems, for example: mobile robots, conference and live cameras, VR.

Retail Restock Robot

With the advent of the new retail era and the rapid rise of e-commerce, retailers need to create and improve the retail experience of consumers to attract more consumers and navigate through many challenges. Retail robots are intelligent high-tech products after the introduction of core robot technology in the retail industry. Now they are more and more used by retailers in the offline stores, playing an increasingly rich role of picker, warehouse manager, shopping guide and so on. Badger™ robot are one such niche solution that automatically detects empty shelves and automatically generates replenishment lists.

As you can see, Badger robot uses multiple camera arrays to move through containers, with each camera covering a portion of the product and then stitching it together to detect and identify the entire shelf.

Conference and multi-view

Jabra PanaCast is a conferencing camera that uses three 13 million camera array modules to output 180 degree field of view after stitching, camera arrays are pioneering improvements to the videoconferencing experience and reduced deployment costs.

multi-view is another innovative application in television broadcasting, live video. Intel True View and Raytrix are the most representative players, which can bring about an immersive live experience.

VR

Meta unveiled its latest VR headset and while the $1,500 price of the Meta Quest Pro made headlines, the new device has the potential to change the future of remote work and online collaboration.

A total of 10 camera modules for different purposes are configured on the HMD, camera array technology has become a key capability that VR uses to perceive the world.

In the next article, we'll share how openncc has leveraged its technical strengths to provide a core visual solution for these scenarios.
